Maryland partners with Elizabeth Dole Foundation to aid military and veteran caregivers. Governor Wes Moore announces state's commitment to support over 150,000 caregivers through Hidden Heroes campaign.

On June 6, 2023, Governor Wes Moore of Maryland announced a partnership with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to support military and veteran caregivers. The state has joined the Hidden Heroes campaign, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and providing resources for families of veterans.

Governor Moore, a former U.S. Army paratrooper and captain who served in Afghanistan, emphasized the state's commitment to supporting caregivers. He stated, "We want our Hidden Heroes to know that Maryland sees you. We are committed to providing the resources you need to deliver the care our service members and veterans deserve."

The Hidden Heroes campaign, launched in 2016, is chaired by actor Tom Hanks and represents a network of over 200 communities nationwide. It seeks to address challenges faced by caregivers and connect them with one another.

Elizabeth Dole, who established her foundation in 2012, joined Governor Moore for the announcement. Dole, a former Republican North Carolina senator (2003-2009), created the foundation to assist spouses, parents, family members, and friends caring for wounded, ill, or injured veterans. She was married to Bob Dole, a World War II veteran and longtime Congressional leader who passed away in December 2021.

Steve Schwab, CEO of the Hidden Heroes campaign, praised Maryland's efforts and expressed hope that other governors would follow suit. He emphasized the importance of a coalition approach in supporting caregivers.

First Lady Dawn Moore, a former military spouse, highlighted the personal significance of these initiatives, stating, "It is our responsibility as a state to support the whole family and that's why Maryland is leaning in."

By joining the Hidden Heroes campaign, Maryland aims to support over 150,000 military and veteran caregivers across the state. The campaign works with various stakeholders, including individuals, businesses, communities, and civic, faith, and government leaders, to address the long-term needs of caregivers.

"We want our Hidden Heroes to know that Maryland sees you. We are committed to providing the resources you need to deliver the care our service members and veterans deserve."
