In the lead-up to this falls ballot measure six University of Nebraska student-athletes have stepped into the states abortion debate; taking part in newly-released campaign videos
The athletes appear in two separate ads supporting a proposed rule that would keep Nebraskas current 12-week abortion limit (which includes exceptions for assault incest and health-related issues). These student-sports-stars are also asking people to vote against another proposal: one that would allow abortions until about 23 weeks
- support keeping current 12-week restrictions
- oppose extending timeframe to 23 weeks
- back exceptions for medical needs
- maintain allowances for assault cases
The first-of-its-kind campaign brings college athletics into a state-wide discussion — showing how different groups are getting involved in this hot-button issue. The ads which started running on tv this monday target voters who will see both measures on their november voting papers
The debate centers around two very different approaches to abortion rights: one side wants to keep strict time-limits while the other pushes for broader access based on medical standards of fetal viability
