The integration of technology into taxation is indispensable, says the acting Prime Minister William Duma.
He raised this concern at the commencement of the 20th Pacific Island Tax Administration Association (PITAA) meeting in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands Province.
“The need for tax regulatory reforms looms large on our agenda.
Many of our tax regimes are as old as our nationhood, necessitating reforms that align with
the evolving circumstances and challenges we face,” he said.
Mr Duma said therefore, Papua New Guinea was leading by example with a major tax law rewrite in its final stages of completion.
“In an era of rapid technological evolution, our tax systems must adapt.
“By embracing technology, we usher in efficiency and precision that was once deemed unattainable.
“I am pleased to note that digital transformation will be a focal point of our discussions during this 20th PITAA conference.”
Mr Duma said he was delighted to inaugurate this significant event, and on behalf of the Government, he had extended best wishes for a successful four-day conference and a delightful stay in the captivating surroundings of Mount Hagen.
The aim meeting is to discuss the tax regulatory reforms for a sustainable future, leveraging technology and data for efficient tax administration along with combating illicit financial flows and mobilizing revenue through collaboration and developing a sustainable tax administration.
Today, there will be panel discussions and good practices for revenue administrations.
While for tomorrow a high level workshop for PITAA members only will held.
All will depart Mt Hagen tomorrow.
Pacific Island countries participating in the meeting include the Cook Islands, Federal State of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Republic of the Marshall Island and Papua New Guinea.
