The relationship between Philippines top politicians turned bad when vice-president Sara Duterte made un-expected death threats against Ferdinand Marcos his wife and house speaker (which came after her staff member was put in jail)
A serious conflict between two well-known political families started about 6 months ago when Sara Duterte left her job in the cabinet. Now shes facing questions about money-spending and didnt show up to many meetings with lawmakers. The situation got worse after her chief-of-staff was moved to jail because he didnt help with the investigation
The statements we heard in the previous days were troubling; there is the reckless use of profanities and threats to kill some of us
Justice department official Jesse Hermogenes Andres said they will start looking into these threats. He pointed out that vice-president doesnt have special rights to avoid legal problems and will need to talk to investigators. House Speaker Martin Romualdez called her words dangerous for the country
The conflict has deep roots in Philippine history. Sara Duterte brought up the killing of Benigno Aquino in ʼ83 — which happened during the time of current presidents father. This came up after recent investigations of her dad Rodrigo Dutertes actions during his time as president from ʼ16 to ʼ22
- Congress looked into deaths during drug-fighting program
- Government might help with international investigation
- Former president Rodrigo Duterte said he was the only one responsible
The break-up of their political partnership is quite surprising since it helped Marcos win the election about 2 years ago with lots of votes
