Wrocław Zoo in Poland has recently shared some exciting news: the arrival of four Sumatran tiger cubs. The zoo kept the birth under wraps for weeks‚ worried about the cubs survival. Now that theyre stronger and vaccinated‚ the zoo felt comfortable making the announcement.
The cubs‚ born on 22nd of July 2024 have grown to about twice the size of a house cat weighing over 8 kg each. Sergiusz Kmiecik‚ the zoos acting president‚ expressed happiness about the cubs health and playfulness.
These cubs are the offspring of Nuri and Tengah who had another cub‚ Surya about four years ago. Surya now lives in a German zoo. The zoo sees this birth as a global breeding success.
Paweł Sroka‚ who heads the predatory mammals department noted something unusual: Tengah‚ the father stayed with the cubs from the start. He was gentle and even helped Nuri with care learning how to handle the cubs.
The litter includes three males and one female which is great news for European zoos where females are more common. This helps balance the zoo population.
The cubs future homes arent decided yet and they still need to grow more. The zoo might let visitors help name them.
Sumatran tigers are critically endangered with only about 400 left in the wild. Theyre threatened by poaching and shrinking habitats. Wrocław Zoo which has been breeding these tigers since the 60s also has a foundation working to protect them
