In a warm-hearted gesture Pope Francis visited well-known Italian politician Emma Bonino at her Rome home bringing roses and chocolates; both were seen in wheelchairs on her sun-lit terrace
Bonino (whose recent health issues include heart and breathing problems) got back home just about a month ago. She previously dealt with lung cancer for 8 yrs but got better around last year. The 87-yr old Pope has also been dealing with some health-related concerns
The meeting shows an interesting mix of views: while Pope Francis strongly opposes abortion calling it wrong he still connects with people who dont share his beliefs. Bonino has been a key figure in Italian politics since the mid-70s when she helped make abortion legal (which later got confirmed by peoples vote in early 80s)
Her career includes many important roles:
- Member of Italian parliament
- Part of European Commission
- Trade minister
- Foreign affairs leader
- EU policy chief
He called me an example of freedom and resistance
The visit happened after Pope Francis went to a nearby university that morning. When asked by reporters about Boninos condition he simply said “Very well“ - showing his down-to-earth style of communication
