Regional leaders make key military choices for eastern Congo's future

Southern African officials gathered in Zimbabwe to discuss regional security matters. Leaders voted to keep troops in Congo for another year while addressing Mozambiqueʼs post-election issues

At a high-level meet-up in Harare (the capital of Zimbabwe) southern African decision-makers came together to talk about important regional matters. The gathering brought together representatives from a 16-nation group called SADC - Southern African Development Community

The officials made a big choice about eastern Congo: keeping their joint military force there for 12 more months. This force helps fight against rebel groups in the trouble-filled eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo

The summit - which was a special non-scheduled meeting of the group‚ also looked at ways to fix things in Mozambique. The countryʼs recent vote count led to some problems and the leaders want to help make things better there

The meeting showed how these countries work together on fixing regional problems. The SADC group (which has Democratic Republic of Congo as one of its members) thinks working as a team is the best way to handle these kind of issues in southern Africa
