Russian authorities have intensified their actions against foreign media representatives, placing six international journalists on a wanted list. The individuals are accused of unlawfully entering Russian territory to report on events in the Kursk region, following a Ukrainian military operation.
The Russian Interior Ministry, responsible for internal affairs and law enforcement, has taken this step in response to the journalists' alleged illegal border crossing. This development comes amidst ongoing cross-border tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which have persisted since 2014.
According to reports from TASS news agency on September 12, 2024, the list includes correspondents from prominent media outlets. Among those targeted are a British reporter working for CNN, a journalist from Deutsche Welle, an Italian correspondent for RAI, and three Ukrainian media professionals employed by the 1+1 TV channel.
Last month, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), the country's principal security agency, initiated criminal proceedings against several of these journalists. However, the media organizations employing these reporters have maintained that their reporting trips to Kursk were conducted legitimately.
The Kursk region, located in western Russia bordering Ukraine, has been an area of interest due to recent military activities. On August 6, 2024, Ukrainian forces launched an incursion into Russian territory. Despite Russian counteroffensive efforts, which have pushed back the Ukrainian troops in some areas, their presence within Russian borders continues.
This situation has drawn international attention, particularly from the diplomatic community. In response to the inclusion of RAI reporter Stefania Battistini on the wanted list, the Italian government took swift action. Antonio Tajani, Italy's Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2022, announced that the Russian ambassador in Rome had been summoned. This diplomatic move expresses Italy's "surprise at Moscow's singular decision" regarding the RAI journalist.
