A Russian guided-bomb attack on Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, resulted in two fatalities and twelve injuries. The strike damaged residential buildings and infrastructure in the city center.

On September 25, 2024, the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk experienced a devastating guided-bomb attack by Russian forces. The assault resulted in two fatalities and left twelve individuals injured, including three children. The incident occurred in the city center, causing significant damage to residential structures, commercial establishments, and vehicles.

Vadym Filashkin, the governor of Donetsk region, reported that the Russian military employed three highly destructive bombs in the attack. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that this event serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing danger in the Donetsk region.

Kramatorsk, with an estimated population of 150,084 as of 2021, has been a frequent target of Russian strikes due to its proximity to the active combat line, situated approximately 20 kilometers away. The city, founded in 1868 and named after the nearby Kramatorka River, has a rich industrial heritage, known for its machine-building and metallurgical sectors.

This recent attack adds to the city's tumultuous history in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. Kramatorsk has been a target since 2014, briefly falling under the control of pro-Russian separatists that year. The city gained international attention in April 2022 when a Russian missile strike on its railway station resulted in 59 civilian casualties.

Despite the challenges posed by the conflict, Kramatorsk continues to be an important economic and educational center in the region. The city is home to several universities, including the Donbas State Engineering Academy, and has been working on modernizing its infrastructure and implementing energy efficiency projects.

"This is another war crime of the Russians and another sad reminder that there are no absolutely safe places left in the Donetsk region."

Governor Vadym Filashkin stated:

The attack on Kramatorsk underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in eastern Ukraine. As the administrative center of Kramatorsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast, the city's strategic importance makes it a continued target for Russian forces. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, as the conflict's impact on civilian populations remains a significant concern.

As Kramatorsk faces these challenges, its resilience is evident in its continued cultural life. The city traditionally hosts an annual City Day celebration in September, although such events have been affected by the ongoing conflict. The local history museum, showcasing the region's cultural heritage, stands as a testament to the city's rich past and the determination of its people to preserve their identity in the face of adversity.
