A group of experts checked out what went wrong when someone tried to hurt Donald Trump at a big meeting in Pennsylvania. They say the Secret Service needs to change a lot or else something bad might happen again.
The report (which is 52 pages long) talks about problems on the day of the meeting in Butler and bigger issues in how the Secret Service works. It says the agency should get new leaders from outside and focus more on keeping people safe
The experts found that the Secret Service didnt do a good job talking to each other that day and didnt make the building safe where the shooter was. They also say the agency doesnt understand the special dangers Trump faces and tries to do too much with too little
Some of the big problems they found were:
- Not making safe a building near where Trump was talking
- Having two separate places where different police groups were in charge
- Problems with radio channels
- Not having a clear boss on the day of the meeting
The report also says the Secret Service has some deeper problems like:
- Thinking they can always do more with less
- Not looking at each persons special dangers
- Having new agents do important jobs
The experts say the Secret Service should:
- Have one place where all police groups work together at big events
- Use things that can see from above for outdoor events
- Make better plans to keep people safe
- Get new leaders from outside the agency
- Focus more on their main job of keeping people safe
