Taiwan-Israel Ties Unshaken by Lebanon Pager Incident, Says Envoy

Israeli envoy in Taipei affirms strong relations with Taiwan despite recent Lebanon pager controversy. Shared democratic values and open communication underpin bilateral ties.

In a recent development, exploding pagers in Lebanon, allegedly linked to a Taiwanese company, have garnered attention in Taiwan. However, Maya Yaron, Israel's de facto ambassador to Taiwan, has affirmed that this incident has not affected the strong ties between the two nations.

The pagers, bearing the name of Taiwan-based Gold Apollo, detonated in Lebanon last month, resulting in casualties among Hezbollah members. While security sources have implicated Israel in this operation, official confirmation or denial has not been provided by Israeli authorities.

Gold Apollo has distanced itself from the incident, stating that it did not manufacture the devices used in the attack. The company clarified that a Hungary-based firm, BAC, had a license to use its brand. Taiwan's government has also confirmed that the pagers were not produced in Taiwan.

When questioned about the pager incident, Yaron refrained from direct comment, instead highlighting other recent events:

"Here maybe that incident took much more attention but in our view in Israel we had Nasrallah, we had missile attacks from Iran. We're doing everything we can with all the tools that we can to fight Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis."

The envoy's remarks underscore Israel's ongoing efforts to combat various militant groups in the region. It's worth noting that Israel has been engaged in conflicts with these organizations for years, with the Israel-Hamas conflict dating back to 2006.

Despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties between Israel and Taiwan, both nations view each other as important democratic partners. This relationship is rooted in shared values and a mutual understanding of complex geopolitical situations. Taiwan offered strong support to Israel following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which marked a significant escalation in the long-standing conflict.

Yaron emphasized the strength of Israel-Taiwan relations, stating:

"I think that they are strong and they are based on democratic values, liberal values and things that keep us united together and this is why we understand each other. We are in constant contact on many issues on this ongoing war since Oct 7. On everything we have an open line of communication."

This statement highlights the importance of shared democratic principles in fostering international relationships, even in the absence of formal diplomatic ties.

The incident with the pagers has brought attention to Taiwan's advanced technology industry, which is a significant contributor to its economy - the 7th largest in Asia. Similarly, Israel is renowned for its thriving tech sector, often referred to as the "Start-up Nation."

As both nations navigate their respective regional challenges, with Taiwan facing pressure from China and Israel dealing with ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, their unofficial alliance appears to remain steadfast. The open lines of communication and mutual understanding between Israel and Taiwan continue to play a crucial role in maintaining their strong bilateral relationship, transcending individual incidents and focusing on shared values and interests.
