A rocket attack on a U.S. military base in Iraq injured five service members and two contractors. The incident marks an escalation in attacks by Iranian-backed militias amid rising regional tensions.

A U.S. military installation in Iraq was targeted by a rocket attack on Monday, resulting in injuries to seven individuals. U.S. officials confirmed that five service members and two contractors were affected, with all currently in stable condition. Five of the injured are receiving treatment at the al-Asad airbase, while two have been evacuated for further care.

This incident is part of a recent surge in assaults on U.S. forces by Iranian-backed militias in the region. The attack comes amidst escalating tensions across the Middle East, although it is not believed to be directly linked to the recent deaths of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon and Hamas' top political leader in Iran, both suspected to be the result of Israeli operations.

The al-Asad airbase, one of Iraq's largest and oldest military installations, has been utilized by U.S. forces since the 2003 invasion. It has become a frequent target for rocket attacks, a common tactic employed by militia groups in the area.

This latest strike follows a period of relative calm that was shattered by a deadly attack on a base in Jordan in late January 2024, which claimed the lives of three American soldiers. That incident prompted a series of retaliatory U.S. strikes against militia targets in Iraq and Syria.

Between October 2023 and January 2024, an umbrella organization calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq regularly claimed responsibility for attacks on U.S. forces. This group, comprising various militia factions, stated that their actions were in retaliation for Washington's support of Israel in the ongoing Gaza conflict, which began in October 2023 and has significantly increased regional tensions.

"All seven are in stable condition."

U.S. Official Statement

The presence of U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria, primarily focused on combating ISIS and training local forces, has been a contentious issue. Iran's support for various militant groups across the Middle East has further complicated the geopolitical landscape, with tensions between the U.S. and Iran fluctuating significantly over recent decades.

As the situation continues to evolve, the U.S. military maintains its strategic presence in the region, balancing its commitments to allies like Jordan with the ongoing challenges posed by hostile militia groups. The recent uptick in attacks underscores the complex and volatile nature of Middle Eastern politics, where historical conflicts and current geopolitical interests intersect.
