A luxury yacht sank off Sicily's coast, leaving six missing, including a British tech entrepreneur. Rescue efforts are ongoing as survivors recount harrowing experiences during the storm.

A maritime disaster unfolded off the northern coast of Sicily on 2024-08-19, as a luxury yacht succumbed to a fierce storm, leaving six passengers missing and one confirmed fatality. The incident has drawn international attention due to the high-profile individuals involved and the dramatic rescue efforts that followed.

The 183-foot vessel, named Bayesian, encountered treacherous weather conditions approximately half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello. Among the missing are Mike Lynch, a British tech entrepreneur, and his teenage daughter, as well as Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife. Also unaccounted for is Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance law firm in New York.

The tragedy occurred just two months after Lynch was acquitted of fraud charges related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard. The voyage was reportedly intended to celebrate this legal victory. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 individuals rescued from the sinking yacht.

One survivor, Charlotte Golunski, recounted her harrowing experience to Italian media. She described desperately holding onto her 1-year-old daughter, Sophie, amidst the violent waves. "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea," Golunski stated. "Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves."

The Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, was carrying 22 people in total when it encountered the storm. Local fisherman Pietro Asciutto witnessed the yacht's final moments, telling ANSA news agency, "It was floating, still, then suddenly vanished. I saw it sink with my own eyes."

Rescue efforts have been challenging, with the yacht now resting at a depth of over 160 feet. Three teams of divers from Italy's coast guard and fire brigade are involved in the search operation. Initial attempts to access the sunken vessel have been hampered by obstructing furniture and limited access to the bridge.

Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island, is known for its rich history and diverse landscape. Home to Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano, the island experiences a Mediterranean climate that can sometimes produce sudden, severe storms. With a population of approximately 5 million people, Sicily has been an autonomous region of Italy since 1946 and boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

As rescue efforts continue, the international community watches closely, hoping for positive news regarding the missing individuals. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of maritime travel, even for those aboard luxury vessels.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help, but all I could hear around me was the screams of the others."

Survivor Charlotte Golunski recounts

The Bayesian disaster has cast a shadow over Sicily's picturesque coastline, typically known for its beauty and attraction to tourists. As the island's economy relies heavily on tourism, agriculture, and services, local authorities are working diligently to manage the situation and support the ongoing rescue operations.

This tragic event highlights the importance of maritime safety and the need for advanced weather monitoring systems, even in well-traveled areas of the Mediterranean. As the search continues, the thoughts of many are with the families of those still missing, hoping for their safe return.
