Jeffersonville, India (AP) — Police are investigating more than 30 bodies found and partially disassembled at a funeral hall in southern India.

Police on the outskirts of Louisville in Jeffersonville responded to the Rankford Funeral House and Family Center on Friday night, saying they found 31 bodies, including some "in the advanced stages of disassembly." Major Isaac Parker said.

He said the county inspector's office reported a strong odor emanating from the building. Inside, police officers wearing Hazmat gear found the bodies "in various places around the building." According to Parker, some of the bodies have been in the funeral hall since March. Police also found the remains of 16 people who were buried.

"It was a very unpleasant scene," Parker said. "The conditions weren't good."

The funeral hall owner has been in talks with police since Friday, and an investigation is underway, Parker said.

The owner did not immediately respond to an email from the Associated Press requesting comments on Sunday.

The remains were taken to the Clark County Inspector's Office for identity verification, and police urged anyone who might have information to contact the Inspector's Office. ..
