92-year-old woman fatally struck by SUV in St-Jean-de-Matha

The Sûreté du Québec said the woman was alone and crossing the road to get to a store when she was hit.

A 92-year-old woman died Sunday evening after she was struck by an SUV as she crossed a section of highway in St-Jean-de-Matha, in the Lanaudière region.

Emergency services were called to the stretch of Highway 131 around 5 p.m. They found the victim in critical condition after she had been hit by the SUV, which was travelling along a section of road where the speed limit is 80 km/h. There are no traffic lights or traffic signs at the scene of the incident.

The Sûreté du Québec said the woman was alone and crossing the road to get to a store when she was struck. She was taken to hospital, where she died of her injuries. The three occupants of the vehicle were not injured.

Part of Highway 131 was temporarily closed as accident reconstruction technicians examined the site.
