Biden visits eastern Kentucky to investigate flood damage

Lexington — Joe USA President Biden arrived in eastern Kentucky on Monday to investigate the damage caused by severe flooding that washed away homes, vehicles and killed at least 37 people last week.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visit disaster-affected families with Gov. Andy Beshear before attending a briefing on emergency response efforts in Lost Creek, Kentucky, White said. House said.

After days of torrential rains, heat waves hit the area as families struggled to recover from flooding.

Survivors gathered in makeshift shelters in the affected areas to describe harrowing experiences risking their lives to escape the surging waters.

About 400 members of the Kentucky National Guard stoked to deliver hundreds of cases of water to aid in the recovery effort, Beshear said last week.

The US president last week approved Kentucky's major disaster declaration, freeing federal funds for emergency operations.

"Flooding in Kentucky and extreme weather events across the country are a reflection of the intensifying and accelerating impacts of climate change and the need to make our communities more resilient. A reminder of the urgent need for investment to make it happen, White House press secretary Carine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One.

On Sunday, the U.S. Senate Biden scored a big win when he passed a $430 billion bill that included a clean energy package to combat climate change.
