MEXICO CITY — A week after the body of a Mexican journalist went missing in the northern state of Sonora on the border with Mexico as the death toll of Mexican media workers continues to rise, Tuesday. local authorities said.
According to the State Attorney General, Juan Arjon López, who ran the Facebook web page "A que le temes," disappeared on August 9. A body with tattoos matching Arjon's was found Tuesday in the town of San Luis Rio Colorado where he went missing.
Arjon's body was found showing "signs of violence," Sonora Attorney General Claudia Indira said at a press conference.
"He had a web page on the topic of security. He was known and recognized in San Luis," said Balbina Flores of Reporters Without Borders. told Reuters.
The human rights group Article 19, which tracks the killing of journalists, is investigating the case, media representatives said.
According to Article 19, Mexico is one of the countries with the highest death rates for journalists in the world, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office in December 2018. Since then, at least 34 media workers have been murdered work-related.
Last week, four radio station workers in the border town of Ciudad Juárez were killed in what authorities called gang-related violence.
