FARMERS BRANCH, Tex. — TJ Brodie has taken a big stride toward returning to the Maple Leafs defence corps.

For the first time since being forced to the sideline with an oblique injury, Brodie fully participated in practice on Monday.

Brodie has not played since Nov. 11.

“It’s definitely close,” Brodie said. “It’s at the stage now where you try to add a little bit more each day and hopefully not go backward.

“We added shooting last week and I slowly felt better. The next step is getting back in the game mindset and taking some hits.”

Coach Sheldon Keefe wouldn’t put a stamp on a return date for Brodie, but acknowledged it’s not far off. The Leafs aren’t scheduled to practise again until Friday.

“I don’t think we’re ruling him out for anything at this point beyond (Tuesday),” Keefe said. “We’ll have to see how he responds from practice.

“The guys have held the fort and we have found ways to win, but we’re a better team when we have our experienced and best defencemen available. Whether it’s Brodie or Mo (Morgan Rielly, out with a knee injury), getting these guys back gives the guys life.”
