Kaspars Ozolins states that it aims to add more troops and capabilities to the powerful combat group of 2,000 people that Canada has led in Latvia since 2017.

The Latvian Combat Group is one of four NATOs created in 2017. Germany leads another such unit in Lithuania, Britain leads one in Estonia, and the United States is responsible for the Polish army.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stortenberg today confirmed that four combat groups will be added to brigade-level units. This doubles the number of troops assigned to each.

Germany and the United Kingdom recently said they were ready to lead larger combat units in Lithuania and Estonia. Ozorins hopes Canada will announce a similar announcement at this week's NATO Summit in Spain.
