Christie Lake Kids is a special day celebrating its 100th anniversary

The camp began after Judge John F. McKinley decided in his circa 1922 to offer escape from the city instead of punishing delinquent boys. He believed that the direction of a boy's life could be reoriented through positive experiences at camp, learning about the outdoors, friendship, and responsibility.

Since then, the charity has grown to offer Summer Camps and other annual programs for low-income youth in Ottawa.

"We are very proud to have continued a tradition that began in 1922."

For Valerie Stiles Beale, who spoke at the event, Camp meant her three meals and a warm bed at night. She first attended camp when she was eight years old and became her camp counselor. Now that she's 18, she's still involved with the Christie Lake Kids.

"Words cannot describe the feelings this organization gives to children," she said.
