The Washington Commanders fired defense coach Sam Mills III on Tuesday.
He will replace Jeff's Gonina, Defensive Line's assistant coach.
Head coach Ron Rivera said the decision to reduce Mills' duties was built off-season due to philosophical differences.
"That was what I felt I had to do," Rivera said.
Mills, 44, was part of the Carolina Panthers Rivera staff, first as a defensive assistant and then as a defensive line coach. Mills went with him when Rivera took over the coach of the Washington Franchise in 2020.
Mills is the son of the late Sam Mills, who co-starred with Panthers and New Orleans Saints. Elder Mills was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after his death on Saturday.
Zugonina, 52, has played 219 games in seven teams over the 17 seasons of the NFL (1993-2009) as a defensive harness.
