Denry: Ottawa voters have good choices for city council — unfortunately many of them are competing

When choosing city council members, look for ward ties, history of community involvement, and relevant life or work experience

What a terrible job all veteran politicians do Despite telling us that City Council members have stepped up to offer a new generation of leadership in City Hall. Unfortunately, many of them are at odds with each other.

Judging by the list of nominees announced just days before Friday's deadline, Wordrace falls into her three categories. Predictable, well-contested, and without obvious strong contenders.

Clear the bad news. Incumbents Matt Ruloff, Teresa Cabana, Tim Tierney, and Riley Brockington all have mild objections. Laura Dudas and Rollson King still have no opponents. Whatever the merits of those councilors, voters deserve a trusted choice. For example, in Stitzville, a perfectly adequate Glenn Gour is challenged by community her volunteer Tanya Hein.

On many wards, the picture is much brighter. While it is difficult to assess a candidate's worth without seeing them in action, voters should look for their ward connections, history of community involvement, and relevant life and work experiences. Warning signs are not website, contact information, late entry to the race, but the latter point is not necessarily a disqualifying factor.

will not run for office again and it is imperative that they replace their leaders. Two of his names that stand out in that respect are Steve Deroches and Patrick McGarry. Desroches is a former city councilor who resigned in 2014, vowing to resign after serving two terms. He runs on his Riverside South-Findlay Creek. Desroches was a moderate and wise councilor. he needs to come back McGarry is Chief Operating Officer of Hulse, Playfair, McGarry Funeral and Cremation Services. He was welcomed into the council and brought rare business experience. Even better, McGarry is running in the college district where Coun is. Rick Chiarelli won't run or win.

The residents of Barrhaven now have two wards, both with plenty of options. At Barrhaven East, school board member and financial planner Pat Brennan brings relevant experience, but he is part of a powerful five-man field. In Barrhaven West, black attorney Taayo Simmonds and veteran David Hill deserve a careful scrutiny.

Kanata will also contribute to the new Council. Appointed to the Council to fill the remainder of Jenna Suds' term, Kathy Curry quickly became a major contributor and was re-elected.At Kanata South, Veteran Councilor and Transportation Committee Chair 's Alan Hubley was opposed by three credible female candidates.

At West Carleton-March, there were concerns about who would replace her Coun, a veteran. Eli El Chantilly, who made the late decision not to run. There are 7 contenders in the race. Greg Patacairk, Dunrobin's director of technology and chairman of the community association, seems to have a lot to offer.

Voters also have good choices in Alta Vista. There, Marty Carr, a civil servant and president of a community association, is at odds with Caroline Klopp, who works for MPP John Fraser. Orleans South Navan, Kaun. Katherine Kitz will take on proven black civil servant Yvette Asiri.

At Rideau-Jock, her two candidates with roots in the community seem to be strong contenders. Leigh-Andrea Brunet was working on further education and David Brown had an agricultural background and worked as a political assistant at City Hall. Osgood could be another interesting country battle. Earl. George Dallows is opposed by former councilor Doug Thompson, among others.

Knoxdale-Merivale will pit his Sean Devine, a former federal and state NDP candidate, against his retired Coun brother, his Myles Egli. Keith Egli. I have a few others running.

Put another way, it's hard to find candidates with the talents of Diane Dean, Matthew Fleury, and Catherine McKennie. The first two of hers are retired and McKennie is running for mayor.

As it is now, in October new weak MPs will be elected and veteran weak MPs will be re-elected. Therefore, it is important that voters in wards with suitable options choose carefully.
