Body of Edmonton boy recovered from Whitecourt Pond

The body of a 14-year-old boy from Edmonton was found Tuesday inWhitecourtin a roundabout park pond in Alta. After he fell into the water on Sunday afternoon.

In a media update in Whitecourt on Tuesday, RCMP Cpl. Michael Hibbs said the boy was found Tuesday morning by a volunteer diving rescue team.

Hibbs said the pond was about 11 feet deep.

In an interview with Global News Monday night, the boy's mother said his son was with his twin brother at the time and was not swimming in the pond.

Ali Mouna Mohamed said his son tried to jump on a rock but slipped and fell into the water.

"My son said 'I tried to help' but I couldn't because he …because I was deeply depressed,” said Mohammed. "My husband went to help. It was too deep to go."

Whitecourt RCMP and Fire and Emergency Service was available for the area on Sunday. The park was closed to the public.

The search was suspended Sunday night and resumed Monday morning.

Hibbs said she was unable to respond to a dive rescue team until Tuesday as members were on other incidents. I said I was in Whitecourt on Sunday as an outing before returning to the United States.

"I am not here to lose my children. I am here to give them hope that they will be back in school soon and have fun with them."

Whitecourt is located approximately 180 kilometers northwest of Edmonton.
