Addis Ababa — Earlier this month, about 340 people were killed in an attack in the western part of Ethiopia's Oromia region, a Prime Minister's spokesman said Thursday accusing militias who had previously been allied with opposition parties. ..

Home to Ethiopia's largest ethnic groups and others, Oromia has experienced many years of anxiety, rooted in dissatisfaction with political marginalization and central government negligence.

On June 18, armed groups killed at least 200 people in the Cibi district of the West Werega Zone, according to two local witnesses who helped bury the bodies.

"According to data received from the Oromia region yesterday, 338 victims have been identified so far," Prime Minister spokesman Billene Seyoum told reporters. ..

She said the Oromo, Amharic, and Gumuz peoples were one of the victims and blamed the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) for their responsibilities. The

group previously denied involvement and called for an independent investigation.

The OLA is an illegal fragment group of the Oromo Liberation Front, an opposition group that was previously banned before returning from exile after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018. James Macharia Chege)
