GUELPH, Ont. — Guelph Nighthawks has signed a contract with former Toronto Raptors Lucas Nogueira.
Brazil's 7-foot center, also known as Bebe, will join the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) team as an internationally designated player. Nogueira was the first NBA draft topic that the Boston Celtics won on their 16th pick in 2013. He spent four years in Toronto after the Raptors won him in the 2014 trade.
"I'm excited about Lucas joining the team," said Charles Kissi, head coach and general manager of Guelph. "I think he brings a professional and personal experience. It's a great opportunity for him to become a veteran leader. He's in a very thoughtful place in life and I think it fits nicely with our group.
Nogueira made a 10-time start at the Raptors in 141 NBA regular season matches. He scored the highest 17 points of his career and added nine rebounds and five blocks with Toronto's 99-85 victory in Portland on October 30, 2017.
Nogueira also played in Europe and recently played with the Brazilian team San Paola FC, helping the club win the FIBA Basketball Champions America title.
Returning to Canada for the first time since 2018, Nogueira will join the club this week ahead of the next honey badger match in Hamilton on Thursday.
