Just before midnight, Port Hope fire departments and emergency services from all three fire departments responded to the fire reported on Lakeshore Road.

No one was at home when the fire broke out, as the house was sold in late June and the new owner hadn't moved in yet, according to Port Hope Police Service. There was a moving container on the driveway.
The fire brigade says a wildfire quickly spread behind the house. By the time the firefighters arrived, the flames were swallowing the back of the house.

Neighbor Angela Grogan, a candidate for mayor, is in her room to wake up one of her sons. She told Global News Peterborough that she had entered "in a hurry" and she got up saying there was a fire.

"I ignored it for a while, but he was relentless," Grogan said. "So I rushed to the area of my kitchen and living room. I saw the solarium and thought it was burning. The whole room was shining with flames. We ran to the backyard. , I realized that it was the house next door that was on fire. "
Grogan called 911 and said he tried to extinguish part of the flame.
"It continued in the backyard, so I got a hose and started dipping the solarium and trees, but then it was too strong," she said.
When police closed Lakeshore Road between Strachan and Baurci, firefighters began with a defensive attack against fire.
Police say the cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimate was available.
"I'm very happy that no one was injured and everyone was safe," Grogan said. She said she hadn't met the new homeowner yet.
"I would like to thank the first responders and neighbors who came out. It's a great community here on the lakeshore. It's comforting to know how much we care about each other."
