Firefighters put out flames that had spread through duct work to the roof of an Old Innes Road bakery early Monday before they could spread to nearby businesses, Ottawa Fire Services said.

At about 5:30 a.m., a 911 caller reported sparks coming from the roof of bakery, which is in a commercial complex between Bantree Street and Sheffield Road.

Everyone had gotten out safely, the caller said, and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the roof of the one-storey building. They brought a hose line through the front door and set up an aerial ladder to the roof, where they found open flames. Crews removed the exhaust on the roof to douse the fire inside the duct work and used chainsaws to cut open the roof to make sure the fire had not spread inside.
