Firefighters took about two hours to extinguish a fire that set off two alarms at the Nouveau Monde Theater in Montreal on Thursday morning.
At about 7:20 a.m., a fire broke out near the corner of St. He Catherine Street and St. He Urban Street, said Patrick Fournell, a spokesman for the Montreal Fire Department. said. He said work on the roof caused sparks that could have ignited the building's insulation.
No one was injured in the fire, Fornell said. Damage was minimal, primarily affecting an extension under construction south of St. Catherine Street. Some smoke entered the theater itself.
About 80 to 90 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, Fournel also said.
As a result of the fire, the Montreal police installed a massive security perimeter and closed Rue René Levesque. West, between St. Urbain and Jeanne Mance Sts.
Montreal's police headquarters are dozens of meters away from the fire, as are Complexe Desjardins and Place des Arts.
The theater, which has existed since 1951, occupies a building built in 1912.
