Four Quebecers charged after police seize stolen vehicle, car theft tools in Highway 401 traffic stop

Four people from Quebec face dozens of charges, many of them linked to vehicle thefts, after Ontario Provincial Police officers spotted an “erratic” motorist on Highway 401 Sunday morning.

Traffic team and Leeds County OPP officers safely arrested the foursome after two vehicles were pulled over on the eastbound highway near Reynolds Road, west of Mallorytown, just before 7:15 a.m. Sunday, police said in a media release Monday.

One of the vehicles had been reported stolen, Leeds County OPP said.

Three people from Montreal, aged 19, 20 and 21, face a string of charges.

They include possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of break-in instruments, possession of an automobile master key, mischief to computer data, mischief under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, and possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The 21-year-old Montrealer is also charged with four counts of failing to comply with a release order, four counts of failing to comply with a probation order, driving without a licence under the Highway Traffic Act, and driving with cannabis readily available under the Cannabis Control Act.

The 19-year-old accused is also charged with obstructing a peace officer and the 20-year-old with two counts of breach of recognizance.

The fourth person, aged 31 and from Laval, Que., is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, mischief to computer data, theft of a motor vehicle, mischief under $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of the proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, two counts of fail to comply with a probation order, and possession of cocaine.

All four were held for a bail hearing, police said.
