Blame a “blast of cold Arctic air,” Environment and Climate Change Canada said.

Ottawa Public Health has a frostbite warning in effect until further notice.

“This cold is very hard on many people,” the health unit said Friday morning. “If you see someone who needs to get out of the cold, you can call 311 (if it’s an emergency call 911).”

Call 211 for anyone who needs winter clothing or support services, OPH said.

OC Transpo said LRT trains may run at reduced speeds during certain periods of the day if crews need to do “enhanced cold weather inspections.” Trains will operate at lower speeds when the temperature drops below -35 C, the transit service said.

For the bus fleet, OC Transpo said it parked as many vehicles inside as possible, equipped those outside with block heaters and have extra resources on standby if any of their batteries need a boost.

“All of our fleet will be providing service to our customers during the extreme cold.”
