Giants put SS Brandon Crawford (knee) in Illinois

The San Francisco Giants put inflamed shortstop Brandon Crawford on Sunday on the 10-day injured list.

The Giants recalled outfielder / catcher Yermin Mercedes from Triple A Sacramento to replace Crawford in the active roster.

Crawford, 35, has dealt with persistent injuries throughout the season. According to reports, manager Gabe Kapler does not expect veterans' leave to last longer than the required 10 days. His IL move dates back to Saturday.

Crawford is hitting ..224 at .663 OPS to achieve 5 home runs and 30 RBIs in 63 games this season. Over the 12 major league seasons, the Giants have all participated, with three All-Stars hitting .253 with .725 OPS, 135 home runs and 684 RBIs.

Mercedes, 29, was exempt from the Chicago White Sox on June 18th. In 29 triple A games this season, he hit .233 with four home runs and 13 RBIs. In his 69 career major league games, he is a .270 batter with 7 home runs and 37 RBIs.
