Guelph sees a drop in Crime Severity Index: StatCan

Guelph may be one of Canada's safest cities.

According to Statistics Canada data, Guelph's Crime Severity Index fell by 58.2 in 2021, down 8% from 2020.

This makes Guelph her 12th lowest among her 35 cities. Canada's Metropolitan Census.

Guelph Police Chief Gord Covey said in his news release: Safe, healthy and future ready.

"In terms of improvements, I would appreciate it if you would admit that we were second best (after Calgary) '' he said Goetz. "But that doesn't mean we rest on our laurels. We will continue to move forward to further reduce that number."

Calgary's index drops 9% to 72.3 in 2021.

Statistics Canada notes a decline in the Guelph index. This was due to decreases in homicides, frauds, thefts under $5,000, and robberies, partially offset by increases in shoplifting under $5,000.

Goetz says he was able to get that index as well, thanks to additional resources.

"We've added a lot of police over the last few years to deal with street crime," Goetz said. “This will allow detectives and frontline officers to get a little more involved and be more proactive when it comes to those who commit crimes in our communities.”

Neighborhoods Ranked in the Index Communities include:

  • Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge at 79.4, up 6% from 2020
  • Brantford, down 7% from 2020 to 75.7
  • London increased by 7% to 80.1
  • Hamilton increased by 2% to 56.9

The Violent Crime Severity Index in 2021 decreased by 22% from 2020.
