LAGOS — State that armed groups killed an unknown number of people and kidnapped four Chinese workers and some local employees after an attack at a mine in Nigeria in northwestern Nigeria. An internal security officer said Thursday.

Niger is one of the northwestern states where armed gangsters are terrorizing the population by killing and abducting people for ransom.

Emmanuel Umar said security forces responded to the distress signal on Wednesday after armed groups invaded the mining site in the village of Ajata Aboki in the Shiroro district of Niger.

"As a result, joint security forces have engaged terrorists and the number of casualties from both sides has not yet been determined," Umar said in a statement.

"But the number of workers at the mining site, including four Chinese, has not yet been confirmed, but was reported to have been kidnapped."

It was not immediately clear who attacked in Niger. In Niger, armed groups are known to have attacked the village. Local officials also said last year they suspected that Boko Haram's militants had a presence in Shiroro. (Report by MacDonald Dzirutwe, edited by Gareth Jones)
