Halifax Blood Service Clinic Aiming to Meet Nearly 600 Schedules for Blood Donations

According to Kathy Gracie of Canadian Blood Services, the Halifax clinic has nearly 600 empty spaces that need to be filled by the end of August.

"Donating blood is so empowering. It's something you can do and when you walk out of the clinic you can leave with your head held high knowing you saved a life," said Gracie Global. He told the News.

While blood donors often drop at Halifax clinics during the summer, the need for blood actually increases during the summer, says Gracie.

"There is no substitute for human blood. No vacations or summer vacations," says Gracie.

Gracie said the clinic "needs people in the door to donate blood, regardless of blood type." , but there is a specific need. She is a universal "O-negative" donor.

"Only 7% of the population is her O-negative. So if you're negative, you definitely need to come and donate," she says.

Darrell Lind has been donating blood since he was 17 years old. He told Global News that today was his 547th blood donation.

After the 186th donation, Annette Thompson agrees.

"I donate about once a week because I'm afraid of needles. It's a very simple process. We have free chips and cookies. We have air conditioning. You are giving the gift of life, It's very important."

Gracie says the process is quick and easy. The donor walks through the door and she's in and out within an hour.

"She has about 10 to 15 minutes to sit down and donate blood," says Gracie.
