'He wasn't worthy of this': Young man sentenced in Winnipeg manslaughter trial

In a Winnipeg court, when those convicted of manslaughter in the August 2020 death of Joshua Hansen learned of their fate , emotions were heightened.

Hansen, 29, died two years ago after being stabbed in the heart outside the Mount He Royal Hotel. Winnipeg police had initially charged two of him in Hansen's death. One was a minor at the time of the crime and cannot be named under the Juvenile Criminal Justice Act.

On Wednesday, a judge handed down a sentence of three years in addition to the prison term, the maximum penalty for manslaughter. Defendants are also subject to a 20-year weapons ban.

Crown was seeking an eight-year adult sentence.

Hansen's Mother Elizabeth Thomas said:

"My son, I want justice for Joshua. He was innocent. He never deserved this."

Hansen sister, Alexi Hansen, says Wednesday's court outcome is opening old wounds in the family.

"Remind me again," she said. "I miss my brother. I just want him to come home. I just want him to come home and this nightmare is over." said to be remembered as a good-natured, affable hoop dancer.

"He was a loving, caring and respectful young man. He didn't deserve this," Thomas told Global News. He hated violence and died that way.That upsets me so much.He died in a violent way and hated violence.”
