Local officials said people were evacuated from the town after dozens of homes were flooded on the Russian peninsula of the Crimean Peninsula on Monday and heavy rains ruptured the river's embankments.

The first-ever flood of the Byuk Karas River on Monday, Tass reported, urged authorities to introduce a state of emergency in the Berogolsky district in the southern peninsula.

On the Crimean Peninsula, the equivalent of monthly rainfall decreased overnight and the river level rose by up to 2 meters. The Ministry of Emergency in the area warned of possible landslides due to continued rain on Monday. (Report by Reuters, edited by Edmond Blair)
