The announcement comes three weeks after Hydro-Québec president Sophie Brochu said she will be leaving the Crown corporation in April.
Seven years after joining Hydro-Québec and on the eve of the process to replace departing president Sophie Brochu, executive vice-president Éric Filion announced Tuesday that he will be leaving the Crown corporation Feb. 17.
“I consider it a privilege to have worked for the past seven years with a team that devotes itself daily to carrying out Hydro-Québec’s core mission and to customer service,” Filion wrote in a statement posted on the utility’s website. “I worked with committed and competent people who possess great expertise and are dedicated to Quebec society.”

Filion’s departure comes three weeks after Brochu announced she would be leaving Hydro-Québec in April. While Brochu has repeatedly denied suggestions her departure was related to any strained relationship with the Legault government, observers could not help but note the coincidence between her announcement and comments she made during an interview last October concerning a potential divergence with the government over Hydro-Québec’s future role.
Filion’s announcement comes the same day legislative committee hearings began in the Quebec National Assembly on Bill 2, which would set a cap on the indexation on rates for electricity distribution.
The final choice of Brochu’s successor will be made by the provincial cabinet, although Hydro-Québec’s board of directors provides the government with a list of potential candidates.
