City orders independent inquiry into sudden cancellation of Montreal Pride parade

Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante has called for an independent investigation into the last-minute cancellation of the Pride Parade.

He Marikym Gaudreault, a spokesperson for the city, confirmed the decision on Tuesday. This comes just one day after Montreal Pride released its own internal investigation into what happened over the weekend.

Organizers pulled the plug on the parade on Sunday, hours before the big event was scheduled to start.Simon Gamash, the festival executive and director of the parade, said: It said it was a security concern due to the lack of volunteers to safely proceed.

Thousands of participants were unable to parade due to sudden movements. Several groups, enraged by the sudden cancellation, rallied to hold their own unauthorized marches.

Plante closed on Sunday, including concerts and other events that said organizers had not been informed of labor issues before canceling the event. The week-long Pride Festival has received $600,000 from the City of Montreal.
