An indigenous youth group is hosting a pow wow at a former housing school in British Columbia Mission.

People from all over the state have landed on the grounds of the former St. Mary's Residential School.

"Every child who touches the ground congratulates here because every child is important," said indigenous elder Marihatawa Gerien.

Youth Group, The Valley Youth Peers for Overdose Response (VYPOR) is a youth-led peer group for current and past drug users in the Fraser region.

These are based on Youth&Emergency Shelters of the Mission Community Service Society. This is a team of young people who oversee multiple youth and adult overdose prevention sites.

"These are urbanized indigenous youths with extensive experience in material abuse and foster care systems." Said Marcella Pruden. Organizer.

"The complete side effect of housing school (which they also understand), intergenerational trauma."

Hundreds of people attended Pow Wow, and the organizers said they were very welcome from the community.

"We will bring this pow wow back to these sacred places here so that people can come together and reconcile," said Trevor Bentley, VYPOR's peer.

The planner said the three-day event would celebrate the indigenous community.

Due to the rain, Sunday's Pow Wow was canceled, but the organizers hope it is the beginning of a new tradition.
