Vatican City (AP) — Sunday Pope Francis welcomed the murdered Italian missionary nun in Haiti as a martyr and took care of the poor children there.
The Parish of Milan states that 64-year-old Sister Luisa Dell'Orto was killed "probably during an armed attack aimed at robbery" in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.
According to the official Vatican media, the seriously injured Dell'Orto was taken to the hospital and died shortly thereafter.
Francis, who spoke to the general public at St. Peter's Square, expressed his closeness to the nun's family, and she has lived there for about 20 years, and above all, a poor child living on the street. He said he was devoted to helping us.
"I entrust her soul to God and pray for the people of Haiti, especially the little ones, to have a more miserable, violent and calmer future," Francis said.
Dell'Orto "she gave life to others until her martyrdom," said the Department of Divinities.
The parish of Milan said the nun, born in Lombardy, northern Italy, ran a children's home in the very poor suburbs of Port-au-Prince.
Haiti, a Caribbean country, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
