Jennette McCurdy talks child stardom in memoir

Jennette McCurdy spent most of her life with her mother on a pedestal.

The child star entered the television industry at the young age of six, but when her mother died of cancer in September 2013, she was unsure of what to do next. I did. 

"I've lived for her, and I don't know who I am without her, and now she's dead," said McCurdy. said in her interview with CBC'sQ. with Tom Power. But McCurdy said she felt relieved too. 

"I could not face this at the time, but there was some relief there, and I felt guilty about that relief and pushed it away.

Last week McCurdy released his memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died, with its shocking title and Both attracted attention for their relationship with their abusive mother Debra. The 30-year-old also opened up about her struggles with her eating disorder.

"No child is psychologically, emotionally or spiritually prepared for the obstacles of childhood stardom," she said. "Even if they have the best support system around them."

But McCurdy said he never wanted to be an actor. This was his mother's dream.

"I think she saw an opportunity in me and found a way to make her dream come true," she said.

"All my life was directed towards her, organized around what she wanted, what she needed, and what made her happy all the time. '' McCurdy told Q 

. Charismatic, captivating and infectious. Behind closed doors, however, McCurdy details his actions as manipulative. 

I can recognize how much of a mismatch there was with the reaction that came out of my mouth, so whatever came out of my mouth, always mom, please," she said.

McCurdy adds that a common eating disorder was how she and her mother connected.

``Eating disorders are everywhere. It just sticks together and perpetuates the cycle.."

She recalls that her mother skipped breakfast, ate half a granola bar for lunch, and had plain vegetables for dinner. I remember. She also restricted McCurdy's daily calorie intake. McCurdy began putting together her mother's unusual diet, but her own struggles was also easier.

``She really helped me with my eating disorder. 

Her late mother did not publicly address her and her daughter's disability.

When her mother died in 2013, McCurdy said her grief was anything but simple.

"I started crying because I felt that I missed her. I was angry that I was crying. My mother felt that my tears weren't worthy. You've been abusing me.You know, there's still room for this person to pass."

Culture writer Ashley Spencer recently wrote aboutWashington Postmemoirs, sometimes The relationship between child actors and parents can be complicated. 

"When parents pay their children's salaries and don't really have their best interests in mind, they may be pushing their children to do things they don't want to do." 

She added celebrity tabloid culture during McCurdy's first tenure on Nickelodeon in the early 2000s. 

"There was a very voyeuristic plot and there were child stars of the era, especially her teenage stars," she said. According to Spencer, her slender figure was idolized, and teenage girls were deeply influenced by this dominant image.

There was also added pressure on some young stars to behave in the public eye. 

"There is a lot of pressure on the kids in the show to be a role model and to be a positive influence on these kids watching the show." {148 

Moving forward after acting

She wasn't confident about quitting acting, but McCurdy said it was. I knew it was the right decision.

She devoted herself to her writing and directing, created a one-woman show of the same name in her memoir, and began hosting a podcast calledEmpty Inside. She has also written and directed short films she has Kenny and Eight.

She spent years in therapy before thinking about writing her memoir.
