Decided to side with Enbridge in Michigan's latest effort to shut down the Line 5 pipeline

A Michigan judge ruled in favor of Enbridge in a long-running dispute with the state over the Line 5 cross-border pipeline .

In her ruling, Judge Janet Neff said the matter belongs to federal court. This is a blow to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's attempt to shut down the pipeline.

This is his second time in nine months that Neff has backed his Enbridge on a jurisdiction issue.

Whitmer has since attempted to close Line 5 in November 2020, fearing a spill in the Strait of Mackinac, where the pipeline crosses the Great Lakes.

Proponents, including the Canadian federal government, have called Route 5 an important and essential energy source for Ontario, Quebec and several Midwestern provinces.

Age 69 Owned and operated by Calgary-based Enbridge, the Line 5 pipeline passes more than 540,000 barrels of crude oil and natural gas liquids per day across the Canadian-U.S. border and the Great Lakes. The lake bed under the strait connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
