Municipal politicians wait to see details of proposed powers for Ontario's mayors to give vetoes to laws that are inconsistent with Ontario's priorities. I'm here.

Ontario's premier is pitching the idea as a way to address the state's housing crisis.

Councilor Wayne Hill is an idea in principle, but reserves final judgment when he sees the details.

"I think it will work," says Hill. "At the end of the day, we need to build housing in our communities, and if this is one way to make it happen, I think it could be a good thing." 18}

Overriding the mayor's veto requires a two-thirds vote of the city council.

Queen's University political science doctoral candidate Tim Abley says the proposed mayor's powers go beyond housing.

"It goes to the mayor who has better control over the agenda and better control of the budget within the community," he says.

That budget control is just one of Alderman Jeff McLaren's concerns.

"We can only modify it, not help dictate it. That is the greatest power the Council has," says McLaren. ``It's about directing where the money goes.''

Christine Sypnowich belongs to the Coalition of Kingston Communities, a group that advocates for transparency and accountability in city halls.

"It's undemocratic," says Sipnowicz.

"We in Kingston need to step into the fire of all candidates for mayor," she continues. "Ask them what they think of this policy and whether they respect the principles of democracy." said he was looking for
