Knoxdale-Merivale: Egli — Here are five pillars my campaign focuses on

I'll concentrate on: Affordable housing; emergency preparedness; environment; intensification; and public transportation.

The Citizen invited candidates in the Oct. 24 municipal election to share their thoughts:

Fellow residents of Ward 9 Knoxdale-Merivale, my name is Myles Egli and I come from a family of four children, including your current councillor. I have lived in the Manordale section of the ward for 30 years, where I have immersed myself in  the community while raising my two boys.

I have been involved with the Manordale-Woodvale Community Association for more than 10 years, the last nine as president. Additionally, I have been a member of the Knoxdale-Merivale Council, where I worked with the other community associations in the ward and the city.

On June 30, I retired from my 20-year career as a production manager, to start the longest job interview of my life! Every day since, I have worked to get to know you, earn your trust, and convince you that I am the best person running to become your next city councillor. This community is part of me, and I am part of it.

My platform has five pillars: Affordable housing; emergency preparedness; environment; intensification; and public transportation. Four of the five pillars must work hand-in-hand if we are going to solve some of the key problems facing our ward and the city at-large.

Furthermore, I feel strongly that emergency preparedness needs to be integrated with the other four as we move forward. It is part of our past that needs to be fixed.

As a result of the severe weather events that have occurred in our city, I would recommend that all community buildings be equipped with generators. We need a hub where residents can go if they are without power for long periods of time: to charge their phones, to have access to WiFi, to get bottled water and perhaps even to have access to a hot meal. These were all things that were provided at the Manordale-Woodvale Community Building after the tornado and the Derecho. It was evidently very appreciated.

As for the other four pillars, if we are considering intensification projects we must factor in the need for affordable housing; reliable, accessible and affordable public transportation; and the need to build responsibly to protect our environment. Only then will we be growing our city in a fashion that will allow us to pass it on to our children and grandchildren.

We need to include rain gardens, green spaces, renewable energy, and recycled materials whenever possible with new builds. The environment will take care of us but only if we take care of it.

I am asking for your support so that I can become your next city councillor. I will work diligently alongside residents (you!) to find equitable solutions to community challenges. On Oct. 24, please vote EGLI, the caring, passionate and fiscally responsible candidate! The candidate that will go the extra MYLES for you!
