Lily: Ford's cabinet grows and core economic teams stay in place

The 2022 Dougford cabinet is very different from what he first swore. .. 4 years ago. There is much more ethnic and racial diversity and much more ministers, but not so many women.

Ford's first cabinet in 2018 was a slim cabinet with only 21 members, but the new cabinet has grown to 230, including the premiere. This is a 40% increase compared to four years ago. Ford currently has 36% of the caucuses made up of ministers.

It's not uncommon for governments to grow and grow in the second phase, but let's hope this trend doesn't continue past Friday.

The big news is, of course, that Silvia Jones has been appointed as the new Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister. Jones has done a great job before helping rebuild the healthcare system in the post-pandemic world, and she hopefully brings about the long-awaited reforms.

Governments need to leverage the capabilities of the private sector to remove surgical backlogs in areas such as cataracts, hip and knee replacements, and hernia surgery. This is not supported by bureaucrats or hospital facilities, but it does need to be done by the government. Jones will need a lot of determination and support from the Prime Minister and his office to achieve this.

The decision to leave Peter Bethlenfalvy in finance and Prabmeet Sarkaria to the Finance Commission shows that the government wants to take a steady approach in this area. .. Let's hope that the fiscal restraint instincts of both men will take root after three years of increased spending.

The Ontario Teachers Union has already expressed dissatisfaction with Steven Lecce's continued minister of education. It should tell you everything you need to know. This was a good move.

The change of ministers would have been a bad move as the state and unions are about to begin contract negotiations. The union never likes the Minister of Education, so it didn't make sense to give them the people you hate, as contract negotiations began.

The Prime Minister's nephew, Michael Ford, has been appointed to the Cabinet as a rookie MPP and much is happening. Young Ford had experience in the city hall and before that as a school councilor, and he not only proved himself, but also surprised critics.

Still, the optics of appointing his nephew and giving enemy ammunition to shout nepotism was not the best move by the Prime Minister and his team. It would have been wise and undisputed to have Michael join the team by appointing Michael as an assistant MP and having him prove himself at Queen's Park.

Even with larger cabinets, the number of women at Ford's table is the same, seven. That's what critics always point out.

{ The date sworn in 86} has been set. There are other newcomers, including George Pilly. Former mayor of Timmins in charge of mining and Graydon Smith, former mayor of Bracebridge in charge of natural resources and forestry. Rookie Michael Kirzner is the new recruiting president, Neil Ramsden is the Minister of Tourism, and Kalmine Williams is her role as Deputy Minister dealing with women's social and economic opportunities.

The core group responsible for the files involved in building infrastructure and creating jobs remains the same. This is good news for Ontario. The ability to attract new car investment in the last two years has been impressive and the good news hasn't come yet.

Ford campaigned to get it done, mainly he was talking about the post-pandemic economy. He and his team have a big job in front of them. It's time to get to work.
