Lily: Ford's cabinet grows and core economic teams stay in place

The 2022 Dougford cabinet is very different from what he first swore. .. 4 years ago. There is much more ethnic and racial diversity, much more ministers, but not so many women.

Ford's first cabinet in 2018 was a lean cabinet with only 21 members, but the new cabinet has swelled to 230, including the premiere. This is a 40% increase compared to four years ago. Ford currently has 36% of Caucus made up of ministers.

It's not uncommon for the government to grow and grow in the second phase, but let's hope this trend doesn't continue past Friday.

The big news, of course, is that Sylvia Jones has been appointed as the new Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister. Jones has done a lot of work before helping rebuild the healthcare system in the post-pandemic world, but she hopefully can bring about the reforms she's been coveted.

The government needs to leverage the capabilities of the private sector to remove surgical backlogs in areas such as cataracts, hip and knee replacement, and hernia surgery. This is not something that bureaucrats or hospital facilities support, but it is something that the government needs to do. Jones will need a lot of determination and support from the Prime Minister and his office to achieve this.

The decision to leave Peter Bethlenfalvy to the Finance Department and Prabmeet Sarkaria to the Finance Committee shows that the government wants to take a steady approach in this area. increase. Let's hope that after three years of increased spending, both men's financially constrained instincts will take hold.

The Ontario Teachers' Union has already complained that Stephen Lecce continues to be Minister of Education. It should tell you everything you need to know. This was a good move.

The change of minister would have been a bad move as the state and the union are about to begin contract negotiations. The union never likes the Minister of Education, so it didn't make sense to give them the people you dislike, as contract negotiations began.

The premier nephew Michael Ford has been appointed to the Cabinet as a rookie MPP and much is happening. Young Ford had experience in the city hall and before that as a school councilor, and he not only proved himself, but also surprised critics.

Still, the optics of appointing his nephew and giving the enemy ammunition to shout nepotism was not the best move by the Prime Minister and his team. It was wise and indisputable to have Michael join the team by appointing Michael as an assistant parliamentarian and having him prove himself at Queen's Park.

As the size of the cabinet grows, the number of women at Ford's table remains the same, seven. That's something critics always point out.

{ The date to be sworn in 86} has been set. There are other newcomers, including George Pilly. Former Mayor of Timins, who is in charge of mining, and Graydon Smith, who is now mayor of Bracebridge, who is in charge of natural resources and forestry. Rookie Michael Kerzner is the new recruiter general, Neil Lumsden is the Minister of Tourism, and Charmaine Williams is the Deputy Minister dealing with women's social and economic opportunities.

The core group responsible for the files involved in building infrastructure and creating jobs remains the same. This is good news for Ontario. The ability to attract new car investment in the last two years has been impressive and the good news hasn't come yet.

Ford campaigned to achieve that, mainly talking about the post-pandemic economy. He and his team have a big job in front of them. It's time to get to work.
