Lansing, Michigan (AP) — Michigan's Republican gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon on Friday nominated former Port Huron Rep. Shane Hernandez to oust Democratic Gov. elected as presidential candidate.
Hernandez served two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives and ran for Congress through 2020, but was unsuccessful. He served one term as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, which has a strong budget.
"Shane Hernandez as Lieutenant Governor will help improve our schools, create safer communities and improve our economy," Dixon said in a statement.
Hernandez said Dixon's "vision was the right one for Michigan to defeat Whitmer and pay the damage she did to our families, students, and business owners." I believe it will start repairing.”
Dixon announced her choice an hour before the state's GOP deadline. At the state Republican convention on August 27, delegates will vote to confirm her election.
Whitmer's lieutenant governor is Garlin Gilchrist II. The general election is her November 8th.
