Toronto’s gone and ranked higher than Montreal. This list of the most child-friendly cities in Canada was compiled using math, not hearts beating with enduring love for the best city in the country.

The Clever Canadian website, designed for tourists and newcomers to Canada, ranked cities based on such indicators as population, household income, daycare access and cost, and the number of parks and families in the city. Quebec bookended the Top 10 list, with Quebec City ranked the most child-friendly place in the country and Sherbrooke coming in at No. 10.

Montreal is in the top 10 “because of its affordable housing, daycare costs, and pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods,” Clever Canadian says. “The whole city is teeming with lush green spaces perfect for young kids to run around in.” They’re also big fans of the colour-coded métro system.

The site lauds Quebec City for its relatively low crime rate and Sherbrooke “is known to be a good balance between urban life and nature.”

Thanks to subsidized daycare and green spaces, other Quebec towns appearing on the 51-city list are Longueuil (11), St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (14), Trois-Rivières (20) and St-Bruno-de-Montarville (32).

Nanaimo, B.C., sits comfortable in spot 51.
