Montreal weather: Monday is for Martians

Nov. 28 is Red Planet Day.

A couple of astronauts from a team from Europe and Israel walk in spacesuits during a training mission for Mars at a site that simulates an off-site station at the Ramon Crater in Mitzpe Ramon in Israel's southern Negev desert on Oct. 10, 2021. Six astronauts from Portugal, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, and Israel will be cut off from the world for a month, from Oct. 4-31, only able leave their habitat in spacesuits as if they were on Mars. Their mission, the AMADEE-20 Mars simulation, will be carried out in a Martian terrestrial analog and directed by a dedicated Mission Support Centre in Austria, to conduct experiments ahead of future human and robotic Mars exploration missions.

It’s been exactly 57 years since the Mariner 4 blasted off. The flyby spacecraft would, months later, send back the first pictures of Mars.

“In addition to providing key information about how to safely deliver future missions to the Martian surface, the spacecraft far outlasted its planned eight-month mission,” NASA says. “It lasted about three years in solar orbit, continuing long-term studies of the solar wind and making coordinated measurements with the Mariner 5 spacecraft.”
