Montreal weather: Smog warning, special weather statement issued

It's going to get very cold very suddenly Thursday.

Environment Canada kicked off Wednesday with two alerts.

A smog warning was issued for Montreal and surrounding areas and was expected to continue throughout the morning. The meteorological agency advised that children with asthma and people with respiratory ailments or heart disease “avoid intense physical activity outdoors until the smog warning is lifted.”

A special weather statement looks ahead to Thursday, calling for snow squalls and “a vigorous cold front.” They will affect Saguenay—Lac-St-Jean and the St. Lawrence Valley Thursday evening and other regions south of the St. Lawrence River overnight. Temperatures will dive within a few hours, leading to extreme wind-chill values Friday and Saturday.

Wednesday, there is a chance of flurries with a high of minus-9 C during the day and a morning wind-chill of minus-23. Expect a low of minus-10 C and more flurries at night.
